Why Indigenous varieties of Rice, Wheat, Lentils and Veggies are costly ?
When a farmer grows Hybrid Rice such as Sona Masoori, the yield *per acre is approximately 30 to 35 bags*, the variation is also because of the soil fertility, the use of pesticides, geographical conditions, etc.
But on the contrary
When a farmer grows Desi Rice varieties, the yeild is generally *per acre is 20 to 25 bags, max to max 28 bags (very good condtions)*
*A farmer who follows natural farming techniques need not spend money on external inputs such as fertilizers but the whole process of Natural farming is very labour intensive...which costs equally, sometimes a little more than the chemical farming in terms of Man power needed.*
Growing Indigenious Grains and Lentils might many times result in Low Yield but the nutritional value of such yield is double when compared to Hybrid.
*Many times we as consumers are confused and have this query, if the farmer is not using any chemicals and external inputs, then why is the price so high?*
At the end of the day, the prices need to be adjusted for the difference in the yield and the man power supplied.
*We as consumers should also take into consideration the quantity of the grains consumed per capita.*
If an individual consumes Hybrid Rice, let's say 100% for 3 meals a day,
Same person would be consuming 30 to 50% less for the same duration with the extra benefit of 100% Nutrition.
*Ideally, an individual who consumes Indegenious varieties of lentils and grains will eventually spend less on nutritional supplements and medication, which is a huge cost and this is all a BIG BIG SAVINGS.*
To support my facts mentioned above.. I wud request u to do an experiment
*Buy 1 kg Hybrid sona massori white rice and but 1 kg Desi Red Rice and try cooking it for your family*...and
Measure the consumption quantity
Compare the hunger levels of your family members
Compare the energy levelsEventually after a week or 15 days, u will conclude that the difference in price which the end consumer is paying gets nullified with the tangible and intangible benefits provided by Indegenious varieties.
*Choose Nutrition over Portions*
It's not how much we eat that matters but how less can we eat and still be healthy, energetic and with full vitality.
